Welcoming the Great Gatsby, DJ Jeff Mills and Erwin Schrott

The Great Gatsby Ballet Show, based on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s popular novel The Great Gatsby and Baz Luhrmann’s Oscar-winning film from 2013, will be the dance sensation of Summer 2018. Featuring dancers from renowned international ballet companies, it brings to life the riotous and pleasure-seeking world of America in the 1920s.

This breathtaking spectacle features eight star soloists from the Saint Petersburg Mariinszkij Ballet (including Denis and Anastasia Matvienko), as well as dancers from the Complexions Contemporary Ballet (USA) and the Kiev and Odessa National Ballet companies. They embody the jaded society of the filthy rich, living in a frenzy of jazz and opportunity, but whose world is superficial and empty of real emotion. Besides this cast of professional artists, the work of director-choreographer Dwight Rhoden guarantees the production’s success. In addition to working on ballet performances, he has supplied ambitious choreography for Prince, Lenny Kravitz, Nina Simon and, last but not least, one of the world’s most spectacular companies, Cirque Du Soleil.

Star DJ Jeff Mills, famous the world over for his imposing presence, brings a genuine musical curiosity and spectacular concert show imbued with philosophical meaning to Margaret Island Open-Air Theatre. Known for his ambitious compositions, the innovative disc jockey has worked for more than a decade with large symphonic orchestras, creating his grandiose tableaux from a unique fusion of classical and electronic music. Now accompanied by the Danubia Orchestra of Óbuda, he arrives in Budapest in July with his newest concert, Planets, in which the nine planets of the solar system resound, together with his science-fiction musical work inspired by the self-knowledge that arises from contemplation of the universe and space. The performance spans the broadest spectrum of emotions, conjuring emotional states in which we perceive infinity. The interwoven mental and physical planes become tangible through his harmonic blending of two seemingly far-removed musical genres.

Erwin Schrott, star of the international opera world, continues one of the most popular classical music programs of the Budapest Summer Festival, a series of splendid concerts featuring the world’s most celebrated opera singers. One of the most beloved and most exciting artists of the genre, Erwin Schrott has performed almost every defining bass-baritone role in opera literature on the greatest opera stages – from the Metropolitan Opera in New York to the Royal Opera House and La Scala in Milan.

For this gala concert, Erwin Schrott will showcase for the Budapest public his dazzling singing technique. With his overwhelming charisma and engaging style, the star singer will cover the broad spectrum of his opera aria repertoire, in addition to conducting his listeners on a journey through the spirited, red-blooded world of tango music. Considered as a soloist to be the opera world’s most attractive male luminary, he will partner with young Hungarian singing talents, lending his voice to the most sublime melodies and bewitching women’s hearts. It promises to be a magical and one-of-a-kind summer evening for all music lovers!
