But first, let’s see the “dirty work”, here are the official requirements before you start organising… The Hungarian Marriage Law Requirements: Legal age for marriage is 18 years for both men and women, the bride and the groom may not be related by blood, marriage or adoption. In Hungary, same sex marriage is not possible.Only civil ceremonies are recognised, religious weddings are usually arranged right after the civil one. There are no residency requirements to marry in Hungary, but you will have to wait 30 days after obtaining your marriage licence before you can marry. Getting a marriage licence for EU citizens: You must take the papers mentioned below to the Municipal Council offices in Hungary where you want to get married. In order to obtain the Certificate of No Impediment you must have lived in Hungary for at least 21 days before applying at your embassy. You must then swear an affidavit that you are free to marry and complete a Notice to Marry form. Your intention to marry is posted at the embassy for at least 21 days, then the certificate will be issued in Hungarian. Alternatively, you can obtain a Certificate in your home country and then have it translated into Hungarian. OFFI, the Hungarian Office for Translation and Attestation is authorised to fulfil the official translation services. Ideally the application must be submitted 3-4 months before the wedding. Legal documents to take with you: Passports, Birth Certificates with full parents’ names, Certificate of No Impediment, Certificate of Single Status, plus: If you have been divorced then the original marriage certificate and final divorce papers must be shown. /If you are widowed then the original marriage certificate and death certificate of your previous spouse must be shown.
