Is there anyone who does not like a quick bite at lunchtime in this fast-paced world? At a cool place in a central area, at reasonable prices? A lunch menu might offer a simple answer to all these requirements. But where are we supposed to head to, and what to do (and eat) if we are unable to choose? If you want to know the spots where the chef is not having a siesta at lunchtime, come with us, let’s have a look around. The cheeky: FRICSKA GASZTROPUB / 56–58 DOB UTCA, 7th District From noon to 2.30 pm every day, the Bib Gourmand prizewinner, Fricska, offers a two- or three-course set menu, with one of the best value-for-money lunches and dishes inspired by French, Italian and Hungarian cuisine. This gastro pub is ideal for anyone interested in Hungarian classics boldly re-imagined by its irreverent chefs. And there is a very good reason why their freshly baked bread has become the stuff of legends. Price category: $ The fishy: HALKAKAS HALBISZTRÓ / 36 DOHÁNY UTCA, 7th District We have finally discovered that there is life beyond the boring old fish recipes. Fish burgers, fish ragout, fish soup, carp crispies, filet of pike perch, silver carp pâté – Halkakas cannot be blamed for lacking imagination when it comes to fish dishes. It has a beautiful, well thought-out interior, friendly staff, a cheerful atmosphere and Hungarian fish dishes in every possible form you can imagine. A special commendation for the glass of free homemade cordial that accompanies every set menu ordered. Price category: $ The Hungarian-style: MENZA ÉTTEREM / 2 LISZT FERENC TÉR, 6th District One of the very few places where Hungarian dishes are not just on the menu for the benefit of tourists. With four-course menus offering tastes reminiscent of Hungarian grandmothers’ cooking and polite waiting staff, Menza is a prime destination for the hungry working nearby or just passing by on Liszt Ferenc Square in the heart of the city centre. Afterwards, if you are not in a hurry, striding along splendid Andrássy út is a good way to lose the calories. Price category: $ The Michelin-starred: ONYX / 7 VÖRÖSMARTY TÉR, 5th District Since 2011, Hungary’s only two Michelin star restaurant, also offering set lunch menus. This can be an excellent option for those interested in finding out what Onyx’s kitchen really has going for it, what makes two stars two stars and what international achievement tastes like. Don’t forget to book ahead. Price category: $$$ The fusion: NOBU/ 7-8 ERZSÉBET SQUARE, 5th District NOBU is well-known worldwide and we are lucky that it is also part of the Budapest culinary scene. The Japanese-Peruvian fusion restaurant’s dimmed ambiance, fresh seasonal dishes and perfectionism make up for the slightly bigger budget that you will need to allow for. There are heavenly udon noodles, unparalleled rice, unusual spices and mind-blowing taste combinations. It is also highly recommended to book ahead. Price category: $$
