Let the fresh products dazzle you, before grabbing a bite of the typical Hungarian sausage, discover the Jewish Quarter in Pest, taste the goulash soup, have a langosh and sip a wine spritzer. Do we have to say more to tantalise your tastebuds? Be a hedonist like a true local! The Great Market Hall (Nagycsarnok) was built in 1897 and honestly, this is the most beautiful of all Budapest market halls. The idea of building such large market hall arose from the first mayor of Budapest, Károly Kamermayer, and it was his largest investment. He retired in 1896 so when the building was completed, he participated in the opening ceremony as a citizen. A distinctive architectural feature is the roof which was restored to have colourful Zsolnay tiling from Pécs. The area size of the building is 10,000 square meters, which is covered by steel structure. During the World Wars it was completely damaged and then closed for some years. Throughout the 1990s restoration works brought back the market to its ancient splendour, the building was awarded with FIABCI Prix d’Excellence in 1999. You’ll find stalls and vendors at the basement with butcher’s goods, fish market, and pickled vegetables, the ground floor offers meats, pastries, candies, spices, and Hungarikums such as paprika, Tokaji, but you can also taste the Túró Rudi (a sweet curd roll, with a hint of lemon curd flavour, dipped in dark chocolate – sound weird, tastes amazing). The second floor has mainly eateries and souvenirs like embroidery, carvings, etc. You’ll spend some time enough to explore the market’s vibe and eat fresh pogácsa, juicy sausage and find out what makes csalamádé, a pickled vegetable selection, so unique. Hopping to the Jewish Quarter, you will make your way to the most unpretentious and homey restaurant in town, where the host will tell you all the myth about the famous Hungarian soup, the goulash. To tickle your tastebuds, you will taste the soup, then continue your tour to the city’s first streetfood court and walk through a hip and colourful community garden. By now, a Fröccs, a Hungarian wine spritzer is a must to ease your stomach and make some room for some langosh! Afterwards, you will check out the pioneer of all ruin pubs and get a sweet retreat, pick up a freshly made chimney cake, grab a nice cup of coffee in the coolest place in town. What you can expect on this tour: a 3 hour culinary journey with your own foodie fanatic host, who will take you around and introduce you to the mouthwatering dishes and exquisite flavours of the Hungarian culinary scene.
