Vegan heaven from raw to Russian

Hungary’s capital might not jump out at you as a vegan-friendly destination to eat out in, but, we were surprised to learn, that eating vegan in Budapest is not that hard and there are in fact several places where it’s possible to eat well without meat or animal products, and a few others that are specifically aimed at serving up only vegan food. These are our top picks for vegan Budapest.


Matrjoska Kroshka

Russian restaurant with a twist: Natasha, the owner used her magic touch and reinvented the most popular Russian dishes, such as borshch, sirniky, pelmeny in a vegan version. Amazing burgers in homemade buns also tickled our tastebuds, with patties including thyme-mushroom, rosemary-beetroot, chili-parleyroot. No animal related ingredients are used, except for honey.

Naspolya Nassolda

Raw food cafe in downtown since 2014. All the sweets and salty snacks are raw, made from organic fair trade ingredients. No longer using honey as of 2017.

Govinda

Hare Krishna deli style buffet, this place serves set lunch menus alongside a variety of entirely vegetarian and mostly vegan Indian food in a simple canteen style eatery, meaning you take a tray, choose your food then pay before sitting down to eat. Mind the stairs.

Atma Center

Similar to Govinda Vega Sarok in style of service. Everything is vegetarian, but not everything is vegan, though there are enough options to eat an entirely vegan meal. In the back of the building there is also a yoga studio and it is clearly a popular place to come for lunch.

Oh My Green

However it serves some meat, vegan options available. Healthier food bar offering breakfast and lunch type of food with salads, soba noodles, wraps, smoothies and dips.

Hummus Bar

The menu is not specifically vegan or even vegetarian, there is still a lot to choose from and everything is made with fresh ingredients. Their falafel never disappoints, and it’s all served quickly, and can easily be packed to take away.

Nemsuti Bistro

A small room, with three tables. Daily changing menu – choose between one soup, two mains and different desserts, juices, sandwiches, salads.

Madal Food

A specialty vegan pasta bar, est. 2017 and is the first of its kind in Hungary. Makes fresh pastas, a variety of cream sauces, and has gluten-free options. On the menu also are quesadilla, daily soup, drinks.

Istvanffi Veggie Burger – Downtown

Istvanffi’s second location, est. 2017. Features 3 types of burger patties plus a selection of accompaniments like fries, salads, juice, and desserts. Uses all-natural ingredients and makes the sauces in-house. Burger buns are freshly baked locally.

Edeni Vegan

Eden Vegetarianus Etterem is a cafeteria style restaurant that offers a changing menu. Food is vegan. July 2016 reported no longer using honey. Has fresh juices. Hungarian, English, German and Serbo Croat spoken. At corner of Gyorskocsi utca, 1 block from Battány tér bus and metro station, 1 block from the Danube.

Vega City

Vegan buffet restaurant featuring weekly changing menu including around 10 mains. Has vegan ice cream, cakes, salads, bio coffee. Located across from the Hungarian National Museum in District 5. Since 2014.

Zen

Opened Feb 2015 an Asian fast food restaurant serving simple vegan food along with Taiwanese bubble tea and smoothies. Check drinks though to make sure all-vegan.
