Budapest celebrates on 20 August

The national holiday programme on 20 August, including the military officers’ commissioning ceremony on Kossuth Square, the Festival of Folk Arts in the Buda Castle, the Street of Hungarian Flavours from the Castle Garden Bazaar to Szilágyi Dezső Square, the celebration of the holy mass and the Holy Right procession to the Basilica, concerts on Clark Ádám Square, as well as an aerial and water parade and festive fireworks above the section of the river Danube that flows along the Parliament, has become a tradition in the Hungarian capital.

BUDAPEST SUMMER FESTIVAL
National Holiday Concert: New Hungarian Rhapsody and Hungarian Mass

After its world premiere on Margaret Island Open-Air Stage thirty years ago, the Tolcsvay brothers’ work “Hungarian Mass” will resound again among the island’s trees. Beside this musical curiosity, which has become popular throughout Europe, we are preparing another large-scale world premiere to celebrate the national holiday: László Tolcsvay’s “New Hungarian Rhapsody” on 20th of August!

Musically, “Hungarian Mass” is exceptionally multi-layered, an oratorio that blends symphonic and folk music. This performance will feature the greats from every genre of our nation’s music scene. The work, with its unique material and uncommon realisation, has reaped success abroad as well. The music of “New Hungarian Rhapsody” resonates with today’s rapidly changing world and Hungary within it. Meandering and multifarious – at times pensive and melancholic, at times passionate or heroic – the work reflects an abruptly shifting emotional world.

MÜPA – Jazz 0820

This afternoon and evening is given over to the traditional jazz beloved by every age group, with performers once welcoming audiences at the main outdoor stage, as well as in Banner Square and in the Glass Hall.

Due to the holiday events, several road closures and changes in public transport that involve main traffic routes and bridges over the Danube will take effect in the capital city on 20 August. Today we recommend approaching the city center by public transport.
