The biggest flood on the river Danube occured in March 1838, causing enormous damage on the mainly flat Pest side. You can see the watermarks on several buildings (e.g. National Museum, St Roch chapel). On the side wall of the Franciscan Church at Ferenciek tere there is a relief commemorating the flood and the heroic efforts of Count Wesselényi, the ’sailor of the flood’.
