A flagship of Hungarian patisserie, this famous cake was created by József Dobos in 1884. At the end of the 19th century, it was considered special because it used buttercream, rather than the cooked creams prevalent in those days. The invention – admired by many, including Empress Elisabeth (Sissi) – was named Dobos after its creator. Since then, the dessert has had quite a long journey; yet, it is still on the menu in most Budapest patisseries. Let’s see where it’s the best to taste this cake, made with six layers of sponge, a cocoa and vanilla butter cream, and the irresistible, crunchy, caramelised top.

Gerbeaud / 7-8 Vörösmarty tér, 5th District

Celebrating 160 years, this patisserie is a beacon of traditions and continuous renewal all at the same time. Those who’d like to taste cakes in the Hungarian traditions would do well to try Gerbeaud’s Dobos torte, before taking a stroll along the Danube or in one of Budapest’s most beautiful shopping streets, Váci utca.

István Cukrászda / 8 Jókai tér, 6th District

With its classic flavours, small rooms and interiors reminiscent of the first half of the 20th century, this cake shop (opened in 1957) is sure to enchant visitors. Their Dobos torte will not disappoint, either. St. Stephen’s Basilica is close by, with one of the most stunning Budapest panoramas revealed from its dome, and many interesting objects worthy of discovery in its treasury.

Auguszt Cukrászda / 14-16 Kossuth Lajos utca, 5th District; 190 Sasadi út, 11th District; 8 Fény u., 2nd District

Auguszt is one of the great Hungarian dynasties of patissiers, with five generations of Hungarian masters working hard to perfect their craft. The same continues to be true to this day: you won’t feel let down if you order a slice of their Dobos to go with your coffee. What’s more, they are present at three different locations in the city.

Ruszwurm Cukrászda / 7 Szentháromság utca, 1st District

Opened in 1827, this historic patisserie with a homely feel awaits guests with a real Belle Epoque atmosphere, heritage Biedermeier furniture, and Dobos torte prepared according to the original recipe. And lest we forget, a stunning view of Budapest from the Fishermen’s Bastion lookout tower is just a short walk away. Also, it is easy to get around the whole Castle area with the handy Castle Bus service.
