The river Danube has had its highs and lows in the past centuries. At the foot of Gellért Hill, 60-70 meters north of Liberty Bridge there is a rock formation called the Famine Rock. It is usually covered with water, it got the name because it can only be seen when the water is very low which only occurs in droughts, so during the times of ’famine’. It was observed for several weeks in August and October 2018 when 1947 low water records broke.
