There are numerous public holidays this spring, which is great news for those planning to visit Budapest. But this also means that you need to consider special opening hours on Good Friday, Easter and Labour Day on the first of May, and plan your visits to major tourist destinations accordingly, including sightseeing and visits to museums and baths. Budapest is well worth visiting in Easter (between April 19 and 22) with most museums, exhibitions and visitor centres open over the four-day weekend. Exceptions are Béla Bartók Memorial House, Mai Manó House and the Customs and Tax History Museum: these exhibitions are closed for all four days of the holiday. Opening hours change for several other museums and exhibitions: Ludwig Museum, Hungarian Museum of Trade and Tourism, Hungarian National Museum and House of Terror Museum are open to visitors from Good Friday to Easter Sunday, but closed on Easter Monday (April 22). Robert Capa Contemporary Photography Centre is open on Good Friday and Holy Saturday (April 19 and 20), Kiscelli Museum is open on Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday (April 20 and 21). You should plan your visit to Liszt Ferenc Memorial Museum and Hold Utca Market on Holy Saturday (April 20), since they are closed on the other days of the holiday. Thermal and open-air baths of Budapest Gyógyfürdői és Hévízei Zrt. are open during the whole holiday. Historic Thermal Baths in Budapest are open to visitors during the whole holiday: Lukács Thermal Bath, Széchenyi Thermal Bath and Rudas Thermal Bath are open 6.00 am–10.00 pm, Gellért Bath 6.00 am–6.00 pm and Király Thermal Bath 9.00 am–9.00 pm throughout April 19 and 22. Special opening hours apply to Dohány Street Synagogue and the Jewish Museum: spring opening hours (10.00 am–6.00 pm, but 10.00 am–4.00 pm on Friday) are from March 1 to April 25. Dohány Street Synagogue and the Jewish Museum are closed on Saturday throughout the whole year, including Holy Saturday. They are also closed on March 15, which is a national holiday, on Good Friday (April 19 – Seder night), on Easter Sunday (April 21) during the whole day and on April 26, which is the seventh day of Passover. Dohány Street Synagogue and the Jewish Museum are open for shortened opening hours on April 25, until 2.00 pm. With the exception of Liszt Ferenc Memorial Museum, Mai Manó House, Customs and Tax History Museum, Robert Capa Contemporary Photography Centre and the National Museum, all major museums and exhibitions are open to visitors on Labour Day. In addition to Easter Sunday and Monday, Central Market Hall and Hold Utca Market are closed on Labour Day too. Photo: Pexels
