You can describe the busy Blaha Lujza tér in many ways but there’s no way you can avoid it. Named after a famous Hungarian actress, this was the site of the National Theatre until its controversial demolition in 1965 to make way for the metro station. A display on the underground platform shows Blaha Lujza on stage. Set where the Grand Boulevard crosses the major artery of Rákóczi út, this square is a major meeting point, served by the frequent tram line 4-6 and red metro M2. It’s also at the gateway to the party zone of  District VII, with any number of ruin bars a ten-minute walk away. Nearby is the ornate New York Café – its keys allegedly thrown into the Danube to stop it from ever being closed down. Its other landmark, the Socialist-era Corvin department store, is currently undergoing a major renovation.
