The Hungarian State Opera House (Hungarian: Magyar Állami Operaház) is a neo-Renaissance opera house located in central Budapest, on Andrássy út. Originally known as the Hungarian Royal Opera House, it was designed by Miklós Ybl, a major figure of 19th-century Hungarian architecture. Construction began in 1875, funded by the city of Budapest and by Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria-Hungary, and the new house opened to the public on the 27 September 1884. Before the closure of the “Népszínház” in Budapest, it was the third largest opera building in the city; today it is the second largest opera house in Budapest and in Hungary.

The Hungarian State Opera has grown from its initial 1884 roster of 34 soloists, 81 chorus singers and 75 orchestra musicians to employ many hundreds of people working to deliver the highest quality to the audience every night, both musically and visually. It is thanks to the common work of the directors, artistic assistants, designers, choreographers, painters and sculptors, dramaturgs, répétiteurs, stage managers and prompters, not to mention the conductors, current crop of soloists, eternal members and master artists, that make the Hungarian State Opera one of the busiest opera houses – in terms of number of performances – in the world.
