description

One of the most popular museums in Szentendre is the collection of the Kossuth Prize-winning ceramic artist Margit Kovács, which opened in 1973.

The material shown here was donated to the museum in 1972 by an artist who is one of the innovators of Hungarian ceramic art. We present Margit Kovács’ extremely versatile, technically brilliant, very varied oeuvre, her evenly successful, unbroken career in a new approach. The timeline breaks down, however, more emphasis is placed on certain periods, well-known pieces are highlighted, long-unseen works come to life, archival recordings and videos evoke the eras when Margit Kovács’ ceramics were made. Documents, letters and photos from the hitherto unprocessed legacy will also appear in the new arrangement.

The updated exhibition greatly expands the oeuvre: the collection of outdoor and public works that have been known and newly identified and scattered throughout Hungary will also be visible in addition to the material from Szentendre.

Of special interest in the exhibition are the authentic, hand-touchable copies of Margit Kovács’ best-known ceramics for the blind and visually impaired.
