Connecting the world to the stories that matter

“The photo depicts a personal drama at the heart of a dramatic event. It’s a powerful and dynamic image that bears witness to struggle and resistance. The composition is strong and all the elements come together in a meaningful way. You sense instantly that the photographer has captured the moment.”(Magdalena Herrera, director of photography Geo France and chair of the general World Press Photo jury)

Founded in 1955 when a group of Dutch photographers organized a contest to expose their work to an international audience, World Press Photo is a global platform connecting professionals and audiences through trustworthy visual journalism and storytelling. The photo contest has grown into the world’s most prestigious photography competition, and the digital storytelling contest showcases online journalism. Winning stories are exhibited to a worldwide audience of millions, educate the profession and the public on their making, and encourage debate on their meaning. The foundation is a creative, independent, nonprofit organization, based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, receiving support from the Dutch Postcode Lottery and are sponsored worldwide by Canon.

The contest is free to enter and drew entries from around the world: 4,548 photographers from 125 countries submitted 73,044 images. A total of 42 photographers from 22 countries were awarded in eight categories. A group of internationally recognized professionals convened in Amsterdam to judge all entries. The jury is independent, and all entries were presented to them anonymously.

The prize-winning photographs are assembled into an exhibition that travels to 100 locations in 45 countries and is seen by more than 4 million people each year. The winning pictures are also published in the annual yearbook, which is available in multiple languages.

The World Press Photo of the Year honors the photographer whose visual creativity and skills made a picture that captures or represents an event or issue of great journalistic importance in the last year. This year, the World Press Photo of the Year is ‘Venezuela crisis’ by Ronaldo Schemidt, Venezuela, Agence France-Presse
